Review:

It's been six years since Revmatic shook up our annual Indie Of The Year contest with a near-win for their enjoyable Cold Blooded Demon LP. Recently, frontman Nathan Yetter was gracious enough to direct me to their newest effort, Rising Of The Sword, released officially and independently in February. Considering the lapse in time, I had to go back and focus on Cold Blooded Demon once again, reviewing my own review and considering the steps the band had taken since. With a new guitar player accompanying Yetter on lead, the energy seems amplified, the songwriting more precise and the overall results more impacting this time around.

Every bit of Rising Of The Sword aims to sweep you up in melodically sound riffage and formulatic-yet-engrossing songwriting, the whole "Guns'n'Roses meets Metallica" description Yetter gave his own music coming to full fruition. Only, now, there seems to be a higher emphasis on old-school traditional metal, culling the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and a heavy dose of american 80's hard rock/metal towards a satisfactory result. Certain tracks work better than others, but the majority of this collection is so well refined and executed that picking out highs and lows is more an exercise of the individual. For my money, the gritty bite of the title track, the well written hooks of "Already Gone", the barnstorming aggression and tempo of "No One Wins" and the superb guitar work throughout "See Me Coming Alive" stand out amongst their peers. Honestly, you can't go wrong with most of this record, if your tastes are sated with the nostalgic and the modern alike.

The duality may lean more towards nostalgia, but Revmatic pay honest and creative homage to those bands who have influenced them, which is more than could be said about a myriad of similar outfits. A definite step above Cold Blooded Demon in almost all ways, Rising Of The Sword is a hidden gem that deserves widespread attention, as it has a wide-reaching appeal that rock and metal fans alike may share in. Check it out and, if you're like me, do your part and spread the word for one of the better independent metal acts I've come across.
